“We Were Told That Supports Would Be Put in Place To Help Struggling Students in De-Streamed Classes. It Never Materialized.”

Because of destreaming, my Grade 9 science classes are bigger than ever - and I’m not alone. Other classes, in different subjects and grades, also have 28 students. The students who, in the past, would have been placed into applied classes with fewer students and who would have received more one-on-one attention from their teachers are now lost in these large classes. Even with our best efforts, these higher needs students can fly under the radar in a large class more easily.

We were told that supports would be put in place to help struggling students in de-streamed classes. It never materialized. As always, it falls to the teachers to puck up the pieces and make misguided policies somehow work.
