“I Filled Out My 13th Violent Workplace Incident Report Today.”

I filled out my 13th violent workplace incident report today. I teach a "regular" Grade 1/2 class.

One student "interrupted" another student by talking to his friend, which caused my student to violently attack the "interrupter."

I intervened and got him to let go of the student (after he kicked him again). However, I had to evacuate my classroom because my student in crisis began breaking and throwing classroom objects and furniture.

As I told my class to leave I took my eyes off my one student, who then grabbed my pinky finger and bent it sideways.

I had to leave work to go to a walk-in clinic and get x-rays. When I left, my class was still evacuated and three adults including my principal were taking turns restraining my student in crisis. My other students were noticeably upset and kept asking if I was coming back.

This is not okay. This is traumatic for everyone. I don't blame my student as he needs greater support that he just isn't getting in this underfunded system. I also worry about my other students; they shouldn't have to worry about getting hurt when someone gets mad. I also worry about my school support staff and principal, because I see the stress and worry on their faces. We are all just stretched too thin.
